Sony C1VN Linux/W2K
Installation Instructions

Here is the steps to install Windows 2000 and Linux on a Sony PictureBook (C1VN) without a Sony CD-ROM or floppy drive.

I don't have any Sony peripherals. Here is what I have:

  1. EXP DVD Traveler 800
  2. TEAC USB floppy disk drive - model FD-05PUB

Warning: These instructions will completely erase all data on your hard drive.

Installing Windows 2000

Because I do not have a Sony CD-ROM drive, I was not able to boot from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM as I normally would. Here's the workaround:

  1. Build a special Windows 98 boot floppy with DVD drivers for my DVD Traveler 800. Their web site has excellent instructions on doing this.
  2. Boot up using this boot floppy. Use fdisk to delete all partitions, and add one primary DOS partition to the size of your liking. I made mine 4 Gig to leave 6 Gig for Linux. Reboot to let the settings take hold.
  3. Format drive C using format. i.e. format C:\
  4. Run smartdrv.exe. This is optional, but makes the next step go much faster.
  5. Run the WINNT.EXE that is on the CD-ROM. i.e. E:\WINNT.EXE.
  6. Follow the normal instructions to complete the installation of Windows 2000.

Installing Linux

The version of Linux I installed is Mandrake 8.1. This is a reasonably good distribution. Not much special here, just

I won't describe each and every step that I took in the installation. Here are a few notes:

Configuring X

Here are my XF86Config-4 file. Make a copy of yours, and put this in /etc/X11
