Sony C1VN Linux/W2K
Installation Instructions
Here is the steps to install Windows 2000 and Linux on a Sony
PictureBook (C1VN) without a Sony CD-ROM or floppy drive.
I don't have any Sony peripherals. Here is what I have:
- EXP DVD Traveler 800
- TEAC USB floppy disk drive - model FD-05PUB
Warning: These instructions will
completely erase all data on your hard drive.
Installing Windows 2000
Because I do not have a Sony CD-ROM drive, I was not able to
boot from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM as I normally would. Here's the workaround:
- Build a special Windows 98 boot floppy with DVD drivers for my DVD
Traveler 800. Their web site has excellent
instructions on doing this.
- Boot up using this boot floppy. Use fdisk to delete all partitions, and
add one primary DOS partition to the size of your liking. I made mine 4 Gig
to leave 6 Gig for Linux. Reboot to let the settings take hold.
- Format drive C using format. i.e. format C:\
- Run smartdrv.exe. This is optional, but makes
the next step go much faster.
- Run the WINNT.EXE that is on the CD-ROM. i.e. E:\WINNT.EXE.
- Follow the normal instructions to complete the installation of Windows
2000.

Installing Linux
The version of Linux I installed is Mandrake
8.1. This is a reasonably good distribution. Not much special here,
just
I won't describe each and every step that I took in the installation. Here
are a few notes:
- Install XFree86 version 4.
- no to testing X configuration.
- no to starting X upon reboot.
Configuring X
Here are my XF86Config-4 file. Make a copy of yours, and put
this in /etc/X11
