Instructions for transferring a CD to your MP3 player

Rip the tracks

Ripping is the process of copying the songs, referred to as tracks, from the CD to your computer. Tracks are ripped using a software program. There are many different rippers available, some are free, and some are not.

In order to create an MP3 file three steps must be performed:

  1. Rip the tracks from the CD.
  2. Encode the tracks into MP3 format.
  3. Tag the tracks with the artist/album/song information.

Many modern rippers will combine all of these steps into a single step for you. Easy CD-DA Extractor is one of these.

Start Easy CD-DA Extractor 5.1 (The ripper)

Open the CD tray by pressing the eject button

You can use the hardware eject button if you prefer.

Put CD in tray and insert tray

Once the ripper reads the CD contents it will look like this:

You should not have to enter in any artist/album/track information. This is automatically retrieved from the Internet. Depending on the CD you may be presented with a dialog asking you which album information you want to use. Look for mistakes and correct them if necessary.

Rip the tracks

Press F8 or select "Copy selected track(s)" from the Action menu. You will be presented with the settings dialog. Prior settings are remembered so you should just have to press the Start Copying button.

The ripping will proceed and when finished you will find a new folder inside of your "Documents and Settings\My Music" folder.
